JILLIAN HANKS: I was born in Edmonton Alberta, and started taking group piano lessons under the Yamaha curriculum when I was four years old.  I completed the Yamaha program, studying privately with Kathy Reinert.  After that I continued private lessons under the direction of Sylvia Shadick – Taylor.  During my years of private study in Edmonton I participated in festivals, including the Kiwanis Festival, where I earned several awards.  I also participated in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s “Young Composer’s Project” where I won the contest and the opportunity to compose a piece, with the guidance of composer Allan Gilliland, for the ESO to play at a concert in September of 2006.  After I graduated high school I moved to Victoria to begin my studies in the Bachelor of Music program at UVic.  I’m completing a double major in Piano Performance and Composition.  I have received scholarships/ bursaries every year during my studies at UVic.  I just completed my fourth year and the piano performance portion of my degree with my graduating recital in April of 2011.  This coming year I will be completing the composition (and final) portion of my degree, with a graduating recital sometime in March 2012.
