THE HORNS OF PLENTY--our festival clarinet trio--will perform Mozart Divertimenti at various locations in Qualicum Beach on Friday, September 30, Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2. They will also open Saturday's "Evening in Brazil" at the Civic Centre with compositions by Brazilian composers.

Shawn Earle

Halifax, Nova Scotia, native Shawn Earle began playing clarinet at the age of seven. Since that time he has presented solo recitals and performed in orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout North America and Europe. Shawn completed his Master of Music degree at the University of Victoria where he studied with Patricia Kostek. Additionally, he has also been active as a teacher, completing a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto and instructing numerous clinics, master classes and maintaining a private studio. Shawn completed his Bachelor of Music at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, studying under Stan Fisher. Shawn has also studied with Cris Inguanti and Connie Gitlan. International and national music festivals and master classes have also been part of Shawn work as a clarinetist where he has studied with Larry Combs, Eddy Vanoosthuyse, Robert Spring, Eric Mandat, and Robert Riseling, among others. Shawn has received honors for his playing including a Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award and many academic accolades. Presently, Shawn is active as a freelance musician and plans to begin a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance in the near future.

 

Kate Frobeen

Kate Frobeen first began her relationship with the clarinet when she decided that she had to play the same instrument as her best friend in grade 6 Band. Upon graduating from high school, she thought it would be fun to give the music program at the University of Victoria a try and hasn’t looked back, receiving her Bachelor of Performance in 2006 and then her Master of Performance from McGill University in 2010. Highlights of her career so far include touring and recording with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 2009, regular performances with the Vancouver Island Symphony, and recent concerts in Vancouver as part of a Persian music ensemble and as a guest soloist with the Vancouver Peace Choir.  

Liam Hockley

Liam is about to begin his Master of Music program, majoring in clarinet performance, at the University of British Columbia, where he will study with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra clarinetist Cris Inguanti. During his undergraduate years at the University of Victoria, Liam performed with the UVic Orchestra and Wind Symphony and played in chamber groups of all sizes and instrumentation, performing everything from wind trios by Mozart to the premiers of new works by student composers. In April of 2009, Liam was the featured soloist in performances of Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations by the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.
